Lucie Svatanova and her beer mug: 'My husband got this mug from my father, and my father received it from his father. We had this lid repaired because it was broken; but someone was really drinking from it,' she says. The Czech writing on it says, 'Good beer/Pretty girls/Those are the gates of Czech land.'

The home Lucie Svatonova, 36, shares with her husband John Hanson portrays their distinct personalities and backgrounds.

After buying the home from their friend, the couple surrounded themselves with items that held a lot of meaning to them.

Originally from the Czech Republic, Svatonova came to the U.S. nine years ago. She didn't bring many things with her, yet she and her husband combined diverse pieces to make their house into a home.

"We have family from all over the world, so we have things from five continents in our home," Svatonova says. "My style is shabby chic; I like combining modern with old and eclectic pieces from around the world. As long as you pair things in a certain way and you keep a certain color scheme, you can combine anything together and it'll look nice and homey."

Her love for handmade and original items is evident. Every corner of her home holds something that you'll probably never find anywhere else.

Her favorite room is the living room.

"It has that big window, which brings in a lot of light in the morning; it's very relaxing watching the birds and butterflies from inside," she says.
