Golf is a difficult game. Mark Twain called it "a good walk spoiled." This is especially true if your golfing buddy can hit straight and you spend your time zigzagging across the fairway chasing down your slices. You can practice without joining a fancy country club. There are many driving ranges in the Upstate where you don't have to worry about being a beginner. Not to mention, they're easy on the wallet.

    Westside Driving Range
    732 Oak Grove Road, Spartanburg
    864.574.0800
    Hours: 10 a.m.-dark, Monday to Saturday; 2 p.m.-dark, Sunday.
Large bucket: $12 for about 150 balls.
Details: This driving range is come-as-you-are. Nets keep dangerously bad slices from getting to nearby Reidville Road.

    The Eagle Zone
    8000 Pelham Road, Greenville
    864.288.0001
Hours: 9 a.m.-10 p.m., daily in the summer.
Large bucket: $11 for 136 balls.
Details: Enough room for 60-80 swingers. This driving range is no joke. Two levels of tees. In the winter, some of the tees are heated. Has both grass and turf tee boxes. Also has a pro shop with club repair, lessons and a putting/chipping green.

    Hacker's Haven
    6902 Highway 76, Pendleton
    864.646.6742
    Hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m., daily.
Large bucket: $11 for about 170 balls
Details: No pretension or showing off name brand balls that'll just end up in the water anyway going on here. This driving range is a come-as-you-are and improve-your-game kind of place. Also a good spot to teach children the fundamentals. After you get better, you can try your luck at nearby Boscobel Golf Club.
