It's competitive, fun and most importantly a sure way to burn calories.

Pickup basketball serves as cardiovascular exercise and is great for building muscular endurance.

Some of the main target areas are lower body, arms and shoulders.

With so much starting, stopping and sprinting associated with basketball, your quadriceps, hamstring and gluteus muscles will definitely pop into shape.

Pick-up basketball and organized basketball are two totally different games,

"Pick-up basketball is more competitive and can get more heated if played outdoors on concrete," said Tynesha James, who played at USC-Spartanburg, now known as USC-Upstate.

One has to know what to expect and how to react.

And you have to know the etiquette.

Pick-up ball is not as uniform or orderly as organized basketball.

"There is more arguing and trash-talking going on in a pick-up game," James said.

According to David Koepper, sports director of Greenville YMCA, many members come and play pick-up for the exercise and the friendship.

"They play during their lunch hour and they try to keep it friendly," Koepper said.

Many of the YMCA's pick-up games take place during the week.

"Our members play Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.," Koepper said.

"Pick-up can be more competitive but most of our pick-up players are friends."
